Tent Sleeping
How do I carry my tent and sleeping bag down the trailof the Grand Canyon?
I have a sport backpack, which is not designed for hiking.
I am trying to figure out how I can carry my tent on my backpack and how to get a sleeping bag attached to my back too.
Can I use straps or bungee cords? Do I need to buy a special backpack for all of this? I can’t find anything on this on the internet.
I have to bring both the tent and the sleeping bag or I will freeze in October.
If you are carrying a sleeping bag and tent, than you definitely want to have a true backpacking backpack and not a day pack. Even aside from how to strap the items on, a day pack does not have the structure to comfortably support and balance that much weight (or objects that bulky). The pack would end up swinging around too much and putting too much stress and weight on your shoulders. You could probably do it, but it would take a lot of the fun out of your trip.
True backpacking packs have some sort of ridged frame (inside or outside) that helps carry bigger loads and puts most of the weight on your hips where it is easier to carry. If you don’t want to spend the money on buying a pack (nice ones start around $120), you can rent. REI in Tempe (Phoenix) both rents and sells packs and there are also a number of places in Flagstaff (nearest large town to the canyon – see link below).
Also I would highly recommend getting or renting a pair of Trekking Poles (collapse-able ski-pole looking things). If you are carrying a heavy pack, these can take a lot of the stress off your knees and ankles and provide additional balance and stability on rough terrain or steep places (like in the canyon). I was a skeptic at first, but I always use them when backpacking now.
Have fun! Backpacking to the bottom of the Grand Canyon is one of the greatest outdoor experiences on earth.
