Bladder Pain Symptoms
Bladder related disorders cause millions to see their physician annually seeking relief from bladder pain caused by one of the bladder problems explained below.
Bladder Infection Pain
Most people know what a bladder infection – probably because most people have had at least one. It’s an especially common problem among women.
Bladder infections are also known as urinary tract infections, or UTIs. The proper medical term is cystitis.
Normally, the bladder contains no germs. But bacteria will occasionally enter from the outside through the urethra, which connects the bladder to the vagina or penis.
While a UTI most often causes bladder pain, it can also migrate upward to the kidneys, causing a dangerous kidney infection.
Symptoms of a bladder infection include:
- burning or stinging sensation when you’re urinating
- abdominal discomfort or tenderness
- urgent need to urinate
Urine may be dark and cloudy or even tinged with blood. It may smell particularly unpleasant.
a low grade fever .
Pain and other symptoms from a bladder infection usually pass in a day or two when treated with antibiotics.
Anyone with a bladder infection should also drink a lot of fluids. This helps wash the bacteria out of the urinary tract.
Interstitial Cystitis or Painful Bladder Syndrome
You can also have bladder pain and related symptoms from a disorder known as interstitial cystitis (often simply called painful bladder syndrome or IC). It appears bladder pain and other symptoms of IC may be caused by a defect in the bladder wall.
When you have interstitial cystitis, your bladder becomes irritated and inflamed. The inflammation causes the bladder wall to harden and the bladder can’t expand comfortably while filling with urine, causing the sensation of bladder pressure.
There will probably also be some pelvic pain. Patients typically describe this feeling, which can vary between very mild and very severe, as a burning sensation.
Anyone with interstitial cystitis will probably feel the need to urinate more often than usual, or feel an urgent need to urinate.
Bladder pain is greatest when the bladder is full but goes away after urination.
Medical research has estimated that approximately one million Americans have IC. Women seem to have the highest risk of getting interstitial cystitis, but it can also occur in men and children.
Painful bladder syndrome is normally a chronic condition that can have an adverse impact on the patient’s quality of life.
Patients who have symptoms of painful bladder syndrome may get relief from a drug called Pentosan polysulfate sodium (Elmiron). As of this writing, Elmiron is the only oral drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treating IC, but it but it apparently doesn’t work for everyone .
Some people say they’ve gotten relief from bladder pain symptoms from the antihistamine hydroxyzine (Vistaril, Atarax), and the tricyclic antidepressant amitriptyline (Elavil).
For symptoms that are relatively mild, you may have some success with pain relievers like aspirin, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen.
Bladder Cancer
The name for the most common type of bladder cancer is transitional cell carcinoma. It originates in the inside layer of tissue lining the bladder..
Bladder pain is a typical symptom, but someone who has bladder cancer may also experience
- urine that is very dark and tinged with blood,
- painful urination,
- an urgent need to urinate often.
- back discomfort.
Bladder Pain Symptoms – a Final Thought
Bladder infections are far more common than interstitial cystitis or bladder cancer. So, in most cases, bladder pain symptoms can be easily treated.
Nevertheless, if you start experiencing bladder pain, you should discuss your symptoms with your doctor.
