Primitive Survival Essentials
With all of the modern conveniences our technology has created for us, we have become accustomed to a high standard of living in which lights, water, and food are always available and within reach. We have also come to expect that if we have an emergency, the paramedics, fire trucks, and police are just minutes away and ready to come to our rescue. All of these are essentials to life and survival, but do you really expect them during a major emergency or disaster? The answer quite simply is NO.
There are some basic skills that you need to learn now if you do not already. These skills have been neglected by our comfortable lifestyle as we have so much done for us in today’s environment. If you are ever caught in a disaster these skills may prove invaluable to get you to safety.
- Can you start a fire? Your box/book of matches or lighter will only go so far. There are many ways to start a fire however most people today do not have a clue how to do this simple skill. My personal favorite is a good flint and steel set as they are fairly cheap, can be carried on a keychain or as in my case I have them connected to the zippers of my equipment supply bags. I also like this method as it requires less work and is faster than most other methods. My second favorite is a Magnifying Glass however this can only be used during sunny days. A fire will provide many benefits to you and is one of the three main survival essentials.
- Can you navigate? Do you know how to use a compass and read a map? A compass will tell you directions if you know how to use it correctly. A compass is an extremely valuable piece of equipment used not only by hikers and campers, but also pilots and even captains of ships at sea. It is such a simple but powerful tool that everyone should know how to use one. Wherever you happen to be in the world, your compass will always point to the North. A compass will never let you down and can always be used to help find the way.
- Can you purify water to drink? If your answer is sure I just boil it for a few minutes then you will end up dead. In order to purify water it has to come to a full boil for at least five minutes (I recommend seven). The down side to boiling your drinking water is that it removes the oxygen and the water ends up tasting flat. You can improve its flavor by pouring it back and forth between two containers to put oxygen back in, or simply shake it up.
A fire can keep you alive by providing warmth, drying clothes, and giving light and keeping animals away at night as well as used to signal for help. Learning to navigate will help you to get from one place to another when in the woods or traveling cross country where there are no roads and signs. Water for consumption is necessary for survival; you can go for weeks without food but only three days without water.
