Strike Anywhere
Disasters can strike anywhere and at anytime. The non-predictable nature of disaster results in poor and often times non-existent emergency measures to deal with emergencies. The situation is especially worse in poor and developing countries where emergency management infrastructure is virtually non-existent. However, in developed countries, there are ample facilities to deal with any emergency.
There are many types of disasters. In fact, the complexity of disasters is a big factor in determining the response to any event and the time, which require energy and financial sources to cater them. Following are some of the most common type of disasters.
o Floods
o Earthquakes
o Fire
o Tornadoes and other climatic disasters
o Chemical or nuclear explosion or disaster
Floods constitute the most common type of disaster and there have been a number of measures that are undertaken to avoid any massive damage. The first line of defense against a flood is a speedy evacuation of those trapped in their homes and businesses, to higher grounds. This evacuation is also accompanied by their shifting to emergency shelters. These emergency shelters are special facility centres where every possible treatment as well as accommodation facility is extended to the affected. They are generally established in government buildings with large rooms and halls to house as many people as possible.
Similarly, in the case of an earthquake, emergency shelters are established in tents and earthquake-proof buildings. That is because any other tremor can destroy a building and disaster management committees can’t take the risk of further destruction and the loss of lives. In earthquake prone areas, affected people are sometimes taken to emergency shelters that are situated away from the affected areas as roads and other infrastructure is badly damaged in most cases.
Emergency shelters for areas affected by wild fires are relatively smaller as compared to other disaster zones. The area that comes under fire is usually much smaller as compared to an area affected by floods or earthquakes.
Tornadoes and windstorms also do not affect large swathes of a region and only impact a small area. Tornadoes, in specific, only cause damage where the wind funnel touches the ground. However, emergency shelters for tornadoes, are the most common ones and almost every house in a tornado-prone area has a small emergency shelter located in the basement of the house.
Nuclear or chemical disasters affect a large area and are one of the most dangerous situations. Nuclear explosion or any leakage or disaster in a nuclear facility can damage thousands of square kilometers of area. As the region of impact is higher, so are the disaster management measures. Emergency shelters for nuclear radiation are present in some major metropolitan areas where people can take refuge to avoid exposure to dangerous radiations. However, seepage in a nuclear or chemical plant might result in evacuation of the whole population to safe places. They would most probably be placed in especially designed emergency shelters where a complete decontamination exercise would be carried out.
