What would be the most dramatic effect of a polar shift?
I am in a class on Disaster preparedness. I was speaking with a friend that thought of a polar shift. Basically with all of the electronics, communication, mass transits and utilities gone. Just basically society going to a more primitive lifestyle. Yes we have cars but the gas pumps are all electric now. We have news, but electronics fried can’t watch TV. Is this a possibility with electronics being rewired basically but still have human survival?
The only thing that would happen because of a magnetic pole shift — assuming that it was some impossibly drastic quick thing — would be that compasses on land and within the atmosphere would point to a totally different north. Animals that use the magnetic field to migrate would be confused.
There would be no frying of electronics, no disastrous blow to mass transit and utilities. Nothing bad would happen to our electronics. This isn’t even some kind of massive, planet-wide EMP natural weapon. It’s just a change in magnetic orientation. Even the GPS constellation would still work perfectly!
There is just nothing exciting about a magnetic pole shift, despite what doomsayers like to claim. They are people who hooked onto a word or two, then jumped to absurd conclusions and are trying to scare other people — apparently succeeding!
The people who would be most affected — hikers. Civilian aircraft pilots and ocean navigators who for some reason still rely entirely on magnetic compasses. Geologists, because it’s an important indicator of seafloor spreading, and we’d be fascinated. Biologists, because of a handful of confused migratory animals.
THAT’S IT!!!!
However, if you actual do mean “polar shift” which means that our north-south geographic rotational axis falls sideways and reorients itself — that would truly be a drastic, civilization-ending, human-ending, most animals-ending, possibly planet-ending disaster.
But, as the magnetic pole really does shift over tens of thousands of years, and it’s true that our axis does wobble about five degrees every few hundreds of thousands of years… the magnetic pole reversal can and eventually will happen (and nothing bad will come of it). On the other hand a physical pole shift is absolutely 100% impossible.
Pick a different disaster, because you haven’t actually picked a disaster.
