Candling and Hatching Hens Eggs?
I have a broody hen who has been sitting on 10, supposedly fertile, Buff Orpington eggs for 6 days. We have hatched many clutches of eggs before with a broody hen, but this time we are using our own 11 month year old Cockerel, and we do not know if he is fertile.
I candled the eggs today with a Mini Torch, quite powerful, with my hands cupped. But, the only thing I saw were little specks of light coming through the egg. I am wondering if this is the correct way to candle an egg, and I am also wondering if it is the right time to candle them. But the main thing is, is my Cockerel fertile?

To candle eggs, almost any light source will work. Just hold the egg up (with two fingers) to the light with the light toward the back of the egg facing you but not in your eyes. The first things you should see in the egg is tiny veins that will eventually become a mass which will become the heart. By 6 days of incubation, there should be veins forming and visible. Since birds only lay one egg daily, you may be candling an egg that isn’t that old, yet, unless you candled all of them.
At 11 months, the male may be too young to be fertile.
