John asked, I need some advice on walking Hadrian’s wall.?
A few days ago, I decided to walk Hadrian’s wall. I have from now until Sunday to plan everything and get my kit ready. However, I need some advice.
For a start I’m 16 years old and haven’t had much experience on walking long distances on my own (maybe like 5 – 15 miles). It would be great if someone who has done it, can tell me what they brought in their packs, how much water to carry (minimum), food etc..
Also, I’m not too confident with navigation and orienteering. I can read an OS map but it’s locating myself in the middle of nowhere which is my problem (using a compass as well). Also, Is it hard to find the path signs (the acorn)?
I plan on walking this from start to finish in three days.

Once you find the wall, you won’t find any problem following it. It is also signposted throughout its length.
If you can read an OS map, you will be fine. The wall is shown. There is an OS Explorer map designed specifically for following the wall.
If necessary, you can fix your position by noting the features you see in relation to the wall. eg Pylons, streams, roads and tracks. If you use a compass, take a bearing onto something and transfer it onto the map and see where it intersects the wall. There are Mile castles that will also help enormously.
However, it’s unlikely you would finish in three days. An experienced walker would expect to walk from start to finish in six days (see attached link)
