How much white gas should I bring backpacking?
For a 9 day trip, 5 people, probably cooking oatmeal in the morning and boiling some water in the evening for dinner. How much white gas will this use? I would especially appreciate if someone could give me a general formula for how much white gas to bring in any given case.
Oh and it’s an MSR Whisperlite if that matters.
Enough! What might be way too much for you might not be nearly enough for someone else. This is something you will have to determine for yourself. When you have that many people using a stove, you will use a lot of fuel.
At home determine how many pots of water you will boil a day, boil this many and see how much fuel it takes. Then it’s a question of how much do you want to carry “just in case”. From my experience, that many people using a stove will be out of fuel by the 6th day, not everyone wants to eat at the same time and this means re-heating the water. On a trip that long some one might want to heat water for a sponge bath or to shave, and then your fuel budget goes out of control.
