tactical scenario question (U.S led Invasion)?
How would invasion of cuba play out? If they pissed us off again
This is a difficult question to answer but, here it goes.
FIrst thing to remember is that Cuba is an island. Before an invasion can take place, the invading force (in this case the U.S.) has to have both air superiority and naval superiority. Considering the size and capabilities of both the Cuban Air force and Navy, I do not think that this will take more than a week to accomplish (perhaps as little as 2 or 3 days).
Next thing would be to target and destroy concentrations of Cuban air defenses and isolation of the area that an invasion would occur (where an amphibious invasion would take place AND an airborne/air assault would take place). This would include destruction of Surface to Air Missile Battery’s, AAA emplacements etc. Bridges and access roads into the targeted areas would also be destroyed or disabled. Simultaneous with this the entire Cuban military would be getting attacked by air and SOF on a daily basis.
As for an actual invasion, it would probably be a simultaneous amphibious, airborne and air assault. Considering the short distance involved, at least 1 Marine Division, the 82nd Airborne, 101st Airborne and 2 Ranger Battalions could make the initial assault.
The Rangers could seize airfields in order to bring in larger follow on forces. The Marines would make a landing in order to seize a bridgehead also for follow on forces. The 82nd and 101st could jump into and fly into the country in order to destroy any remaining Cuban Army units of any significant size (battalion or larger).
Armored and mechanized forces would of course have to follow these forces in for further ops.
