Why do laterns break after being splashed with cold water after they have been burning? Explain?
The tall glass chimney of a kerosene latern (or globe of a gas lantern) will often shatter if splashed with cold water after the lap has been burning for a while. Can you explain why this occurs?
Glass expands and contracts (slightly) with temperature. When the glass is hot, it is very very slightly expanded. When the glass is hit with cold water, that part of the lantern will contract – and the stresses on the glass will cause it to break.
Even if the entire glass is submerged, the surface of the glass will get cold first (since it touches the water) and will contract. The inside of the glass (the very center of the thickness of the glass) will still be expanded – and so the glass will break.
