How do you freeze proof a house in a cold part of the country when leaving for extended time?

I’m concerned that the cold could break pipes and I won’t be there when the house starts to flood. I don’t want to run the heat because it’s expensive. Do I need to worry?
I got a couple answers on this, but my question needs rewording. I am gone for 1 to 2 weeks at a time, not a single extended period. I fear that I’ll come home and have a broken pipe, but I don’t see myself draining the water from the pipes each time I leave for just 1 week.
Can I simply let a faucet run very slowly (like 1 gallon per 2 or 3 hours)?

Turn off the water to the house at the meter .. drain the lines at the lowest point to remove all water from the system .. then it doesn’t matter .. there is no water in the pipes to freeze and cause the lines to burst .. there is no need to keep any heat on in the house at all

In response to your new information … Just set you heat at it lowest setting .. keeping the temperature around 40 to 50 degrees will insure no freezing inside on the lines .. I would still turn off the water where it enters the house .. to insure against any other cause for burst pipes .. this way you wouldnt need to drain the lines
