Hiking/Exploring/Survival tips?
Obviously I’m not sure what to call it, but me and a friend had the idea to get some stuff together to go explore mountains and abandoned buildings. We’ve got a good list of stuff we should get from websites online but I was wondering if anyone could give us some pointers since we’ve never done anything like this before (besides the occasional camping trip). We live in southern California if that has any significance.
Southern California is just about as significant as the rest of the world for outdoor adventure with the added conditions that you may be close to that San Andreas fault line that goes wobbly at times and you have the requirement of paying real genuine Californian sales tax on anything you buy to help you pursue your dream of wild adventure.
If you’ve got nobody properly experienced with you who knows what they’re doing then forget going deep into the wilderness or climbing dangerous derelict death traps.
Get some proper training in climbing techniques, how to use the gear, and how to find your way and live with safety in wild places.
Until then you are well advised to stay well away from any big time adventures.
Go out, enjoy the wild places, but be very careful about what you do when you get there. Nobody is around to help if you have a fall or if you get caught under a rockfall or if that solid-looking building was just waiting for a footstep and a hundred and fifty pounds of weight on the one place that will fetch the whole lot crumbling down to a dusty death of demolition in the desert domain of dangerous pursuits.
Thrilling eh?
Only if you’re fifty yards away, or better, a hundred yards. If you’re on it when it comes down, well……not so thrilling huh?
If nobody knows where you are, you’re in even deeper trouble.
Let people know where you plan to go.
Take care in wild places. Learn what there is, how to use it, how to look after your safety and the safety of anybody with you.
The wild country in any land on Earth is a great place to be in, but not with no knowledge of how to live in it safely and how to get out of it safely.
I have lived in wild country on five continents, seen wonders, met wonderful beautiful people, and eaten their food and learned the stars above their skies, the plants and animals in their woodlands and deserts, sung their songs, and lived for short times of a few weeks, a couple of times for a few years, far too short, and with joy and happiness in many lands
One thing matters everywhere you go. If you can’t get out you can’t get home.
Whether it’s a bar, a cafe, a town, a valley, a mountain range, a county, or a country, if you can’t get out you’re doomed for getting home again.
If you are injured or fall sick so bad you can’t move, and nobody is there to help, you can’t get out.
If the transport you needed just went by and there’s nothing else to get you to a safe place you can’t get out…plane, train, bus , or car, you’re stuck if you just missed the only one there is, maybe for a long time.
Can you still eat for the time you’re there? Get safe water?
Stay safe, wherever you go.
Enjoy the wild places, be thrilled at what you can see and do, but be always safe and always mindful of how to get out if you need to get out.
Then you can live again to see another place and wonder at the world that gives us so much to see when we really learn to see.
Take care, have fun and enjoy the wild places, but take great care while you’re doing it.
