Katadyn Hiker – The Best Water Filter For A Quick Excursion
The Katadyn Hiker water filter is ideal for anyone who is planning on a short trek into the wilderness. You don’t have to go hiking to enjoy the simple ease of this type of filter. While it is compact, light to carry and over all simple to use there are some draw backs. But the good can outweigh the bad if you know what you’re looking for.
Looking at the positives of the Katadyn Hiker there are many wonderful features that will allow you to enjoy being outside without having to worry about clean water. For one thing this particular type of filter is extremely portable. You can carry it easily on your back without worrying about it being too heavy a burden. It even comes complete in its own zippered carrying case so that you can throw it on your back and wander all over the woods.
Another great feature is that the filter is equipped with a 36″ long hose so you can get the already filtered water out of your container without having to remove your pack. It really is convenient for you to get a drink while on the move. The hose comes complete with universal bottle adapter so you don’t have to worry about purchasing a separate bottle that is specially made for this filter. You can just use what you already have.
The Katadyn Hiker filter does have a couple of small draw backs though. You do have to do all the work to get the water filtered. You have to pump the filter to pull the water through. It takes about a minute to filter a liter of water which is approximately 48 strokes. It can be tiring if you want to filter a lot of water for several friends.
The filter also only lasts for about 200 gallons of water over the life of the filter. Of course if you have a lake or river that is really muddy it will wear down the filter quicker. There are other models that can take a different type of element that might last longer or have an element protector so that it will last longer. The filter is field serviceable but unlike some other filters it isn’t as serviceable.
If you are planning on a short excursion, especially if it is just you then the Katadyn Hiker is a great option to consider investing in.
