Should I buy a Garmin eTrex H GPS for GeoCaching?

It’s a fairly cheap gps, but I also own an iPhone 3g with a cheap GPS app on it. Will There be much of a difference?

I would check on the accuracy of the GPS on your iPhone. I had a friend that pointed out that (without an additional fee) his iPhone would not locate him accurately. It stayed about a mile away in different directions.

If your iPhone does well, why not use it until you find it doesn’t do what you want.

I would generally not recommend the eTrex H because it still uses a serial port for connection to the computer, which can be a problem with modern computers.

The eTrex Legend H (any anything better) use USB connections.

Before you decide on a GPS, know the features you want or need.

I like the eTrex family because of their small size and that you can control it completely with the hand that is holding it.

All of the eTrex family come with a very basic map that only has major roads on it. If you want more, you need to add the maps to it.
The cheaper units have less memory built in to store maps. Any unit with an x after it’s name uses a micro SD card that stores up to 2 gig of maps (the entire US, Canada, Mexico road map uses 1 gig) and more track points if you want to see where you went.

The H units have a higher sensitivity receiver for the satellite signals and will generally get you to within 12 feet in open areas and slightly more under tree cover.
