How do computers select random numbers?

What is happening behind the scenes when a computer selects a randon number for example through the RANDOM function in Excell or the random function on a pocket calculator? Is it truly random or is it using some kind of system to emulate randomness?

They aren’t truly random, though close enough for us mere mortals.

Somewhere along the line a number is chosen as a basis to do some calculations from (called a “seed”). It could be lots of things, maybe based on the number of seconds the PC has been on this time, the minutes a program has been open, all sorts of things.

Then a complex series of calculations are carried out (multiply by this, divide by that, add on the first digit and so on and so on.)

It’s technically possible, knowing how the seed is determined and the calculation series to predict what the outcome will be, if your life is that boring!
