Flint Sparker

Artillery Shells/Fuse thingy?
Okay I’m planning on joining the military soon and would like to know
How much does a 155mm HE artillery shell Weigh?
And also, the thing that they pull to fire the M198-Howitzer. What is it?
Is it some kind of cord attached to flint, or a peizoelectric sparker?
I know I’ve seen information on the shell weight before but I forgot, and can’t find the website anymore. I think it was somewhere between 75-150lbs.
And about the ignition, I was hoping to hear from someone who has expeirience in that.
Okay thx ![]()
Great answers all, really helped me out
M107 155mm Projectile
The M107 is the Army’s standard high explosive (HE) projectile used principally for fragmentation and blast effects. The body of this 155mm projectile consists of a hollow steel shell containing high explosive. A fuze adapter is screwed into the body and brazed in place.
The M107, a multi-purpose HE projectile used for blast effect and fragmentation, is probably the most widely used of all United States artillery projectiles and is still one of the ‘NATO standard’ projectiles by which all others are measured.
The 155mm M107 is a separately loaded munition. The shell is hollow forged of AISI 1045 steel and is a conventional design with a streamlined ogive and a boat tail base to provide aerodynamic efficiency.
A swaged gilding metal drive band encircles the shell casing near the base and is protected by a grommet during storage, transport, and handling.
The fuse-well is occupied by a threaded lifting plug during transit and handling. The plug can be replaced before firing by a wide range of standard and commercial fuses.
Chamberlain is currently producing the M107 at its Scranton Army Ammunition Plant. Chamberlain also has produced the training version of the M107, the M804. This is a hollow forged steel shell containing a small smoke canister in the fuse-well to provide flash and smoke on impact
The cord you are asking about it called a lanyard it is attached to a sear which allows the firing pin to release and iniate the primer by impact, causing the powder charges behind the projectile to burn rapidly causeing gases to expand and push the HE projectile out of the barrel. There are so many different HE rounds the weight is hadt to pin down for you but it can run any where from 13.5 lbs squared weight to well over 55 gross pounds.
