i intend to turn a remote control into an ir flashlight?
i’ve got eight ir l.e.d.s and a bag full of resistors. How much resistance would these require and how many or what type of battery should i use?
You cannot answer this question without knowing the rating of the LED. Typically the required current is around 50 mA (100 mA for high-powered), and the forward voltage is around 1.28 V. If you really want to run 8 LEDs continuously, you will need a battery capable of delivering 400 mA or more if running the LEDs in parallel. I would not bother with non-rechargeable batteries – it could become expensive. You could try a single Nicad or NiMH cell @ 1.2V when charged) without a resistor, or 2 in series with a resistor 2.4-3 ohms 1 watt
If you wire the LEDs in series, the total forward drop is just over 10V, and you will need a 12V battery to supply 50 mA through a 33-36 ohm 1/4 watt resistor
