How do I wire one receptacle to a switch?
I am wiring an shed. I have 12/2 ran underground to the shed. I am installing lighting and receptacles on separate breakers. I am installing one receptacle to a switch, no other wiring connected to it. It will be on a breaker by itself. Do I still attach both black(hot) wires to the switch and the ground to the switch and cap the white? Also at the receptacle which will be end of run do I still need to break off the tab between the screws? Will this work?
It sounds as though you know how to wire a light. You wire the receptacle the same way. Black in, black out of the switch and whites are capped together. Then you attach the black to black side of receptacle and white to white. Of course attach the ground.
Only break the tab if you want to have the receptacle to only work on the top or bottom. Breaking the tab will separate the two plugs from each other. So if you break the tab and run the switch wire to the top plug you’ll need to run more wire from another receptacle to have power the bottom plug. This is routinely done inside kitchen sink cabinets. You have the switch for the garbage disposal running to one side of the receptacle and separate power feeding the other side of the plug to power the dishwsaher.
Also, I don’t know where you’re from but here it is code to put the receptacle in upside down if it is coming from a switch,
