could this be why today’s bettas are so aggressive?
ok just a theory that probably doens’t make sense becacuse I didn’t do much research on it but..
bettas were originally not very colorful btu through breeding we got the colorful bettas we have now, could this single trait breeding have cause the betta to be more aggresive? I’ve read where single trait breeding in roosters complelty bred out the roosters instinct to do the mating dance for the female resulting in males raping and killing females, its also cause weak legs and hearts in farm animals. If bettas were being bred simply for bright colors, maybe somehow we accidentaly bred them to be more aggresive and territortial. if bettas were always like this, they would have never survived in the wild.
Your theory makes sense but I don’t know that betas weren’t pretty aggressive to start with. Many fish are highly territorial and defend their nests…as you know, the male beta makes that bubble nest for the female’s eggs and he defends it. Seems pretty adaptive to me! Also adaptive for males to chase off other males. All makes sense evolutionarily. It is my understanding that betas can, by the way, be put in a community tank as long as there aren’t multiple males. In fact, the little beta bowls aren’t usually heated which is bad. They are tropical and would love to be in the big heated tank!
