Can I bright high school student receive FAFSA if the parents are undocumenteD?
17 year old, 3.9 gpa, AP classes,,,
parents have tax payers id …..
they pay federal taxes….
BUT ARE NOT LEGAL RESIDENTS
..thE son though IS A US CITIZEN!!
The audit mentioned earlier is called verification. Every student that submits a fafsa stands the chance of having to prove that the income numbers, household size that was put on the fafsa are accurate.
Fafsa – This ensures students are eligible for student loans and/or federal grants. If both parents are not US Citizens based on what you have said…the student can still apply. The parents still need to fill out the fafsa…but will not be able to borrow a PLUS (Parent loan) to assist since they are not eligible. However, based on that…the student can borrow more than dependant students. Usually a dep student can only borrow up to $3500 freshman year…with the situation of his/her parents…he/she can borrow up to $7500 in federal loans.
I would suggest the student speak with the Director of Finance at the school he/she chooses to go to. If the Director is not aware of this regulation…have the student give them the following cites for research.
34 CFR 682.201, 34 CFR 668.33 and Gen 97-3.
These regulations clearly spell out what I have mentioned above.
