Scout Patches Celebrate Scouting Achievements of Boys And Girls
What can be said about scout patches that hasn’t already been said? After all, it’s well known that Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Brownies nationwide cherish their Scout patches as hard-won symbols of accomplishment.
And it’s no wonder. Scouts are part of worldwide organizations dedicated to the ideals of personal fitness, citizenship training and character development. Scouting organizations use Scout patches to recognize and celebrate achievements. From the youngest Scouts to their adult leaders, Scout patches or merit badges mean the person wearing them has achieved a milestone worthy of celebration.
The history of Scout patches in the Boy Scouts of America dates back to the founding of the organization. Scouts earn merit badges in more than 100 categories, including areas such as space exploration, journalism, archery, business and many others. Adult Scout leaders can earn Scout patches for completing training of their own.
Girl Scouts have their own patches, badges and insignia as well, geared toward the organization’s activities and programs. As with Boy Scout patches, the merit badges in Girl Scouts are geared toward each scout’s age and involvement level. Brownies, for example, as the youngest members of Girl Scouts, can earn “Try It” Scout patches for learning new things. Like their Boy Scout counterparts, the Girl Scout patches can be earned for completing specific programs and activities within the organization.
Scouts decide which areas interest them and work at their own pace toward Scout patches in those areas. Requirements for each merit badge depend on the category for which they are given. The Scout patches are awarded once a Scout completes the requirements to earn them.
Scout patches are usually sewn onto a vest or sash, but also can be ordered with iron-on backing. This makes it easier to apply the Scout patch, but iron-on backing is not as durable as sewn-on patches. The iron-on backing also can be used to hold the patch in place in preparation for sewing it onto the vest or sash.
Scout patches also are quite collectible, with many fans nationwide. Some may choose to collect them as a way to recapture the joys of Scouting when they were children. For many men and women, it’s a way to recall the pleasure of earning the merit badges when they were first involved in Scouting.
For others, Scouting memorabilia is big business. One website has proclaimed it a multi-million dollar hobby, and one particularly rare patch reportedly sold last year for $30,000. But for many, if not most, collectors, the joy of trading and collecting is all about happy memories of time spent with fellow Scouts as children. Collectors and traders sell vintage Scout patches eBay and other auction sites, and gather at special trading events to sell and swap patches among each other.
Many embroidered patch companies produce Scout patches as part of their full line of custom patches. They also produce many other designs in addition to Scout patches, including custom patches for police officers, firefighters, military units, sports teams, motorcycle clubs and other organizations and groups.

The Last Boy Scout $1.98 In giving 1991′s The Last Boy Scout a three-star review, critic Roger Ebert was properly performing his duty as an objective reporter, praising the filmmakers’ professional skill while observing that “the only consistent theme of the film is its hatred of women.” For the purposes of this capsule review, there’s no such obligation to level-headed fairness; the simple truth is, this ultraviolent, ac… |
