I hiked and hiked for 20 miles in two days with my brand new hiking backpack and no deodorant or showers.?

So now that the straps of the backpack and my armpits had an intimate relationship during the time i was hiking, my backpack straps smell so incredibly stinky!

My question is, how do i clean it and get the smell out of the straps? I dont think febreeze is nearly strong enough to say poof begone!

This is a big backpack with metal in the back part and stuff.

Bleach will not only discolor your straps, but will destroy the foam padding below. First, wipe down your pack the best you can with a suspension of warm water and baking soda, followed by a clear water rinse. Allow to dry completely. Secondly, sprinkle a cup of baking soda into a large garbage bag. Place your pack into the the garbage bag and tie the top closed. Forget about it for a week or so. This should take care of the smell until your next 20 mile hike without deodorant or showers.
