The name Canada comes from a word in the language of the St Lawrence Iroquoians meaning village or settlement.

The population density of three and a half people per square kilometre it is among the lowest in the world. The country is sparsely populated. Average winter and summer high temperatures across Canada vary depending on the location. Winters can be harsh in many regions of the country, particularly in the Prairie Provinces, where daily average temperatures are near minus fifth teen degrees, but can drop below minus forty degrees with severe wind chills. Coastal British Columbia is an exception and enjoys a temperate climate with a mild and rainy winter.
On the east and west coast average high temperatures are generally in the low twenty degrees, while between the coasts the average summer high temperature range between twenty five to thirty degrees with occasional extreme heat in some interior locations exceeding forty degrees.
Official national sports are ice hockey in the winter and lacrosse in the summer. Hockey is a national pastime and the most popular spectator sport in the country. It is the most popular sport Canadians play.
