Profile – Arc’Teryx & Patagonia Designers
When times get tough, the urge to head into the backcountry, to find an escape in adventure and terrain increases as the urge to buy new gear decreases. So what are designers doing about that and what keeps them going? Tom Fayle, designer for Arc’Teryx and Glen Moben, with Patagonia share their passion for their work and give a glimpse behind the development scene.
How did you get involved with designing gear?
Tom Fayle (TF): I got into making gear that worked by making gear for myself. Climbing was my inspiration, but I do that a lot less now that I’m a dad and working full time.
Glen Moben (GL): I studied industrial design in Vancouver at the Emily Carr University. We learned how to design and build our own packs.
What keeps you designing?
TF: Working with performance attributes and trying to solve a problem. With patterning and ergonomic pattering, where form follows function, it’s finding a way to make the material move. One of the biggest problems is fitting the concept to body sizes. It’s not just how it looks on a model, it’s how it works in real life.
GL: My personal passions which I chase after every weekend. I spend as much time in the water as possible to test the surf prototypes.
How do your designs reflect society’s desire for environmentally friendly products?
TF: We work with green or recycled materials if they fit the need but what we really
work with is longevity and increased performance. The outdoor market is still growing and there’s a user driven desire. We’re building a better mouse trap in the context of what’s not working.
GL: We have a pack line that uses recycled polyester. We also use that in our wetsuits to make them the lowest impact and most environmental. They have merino wool and recycled polyester liners with external shelf lining. We’re inspired by the best practices to build environmentally friendly products. We look for the longevity of a product and work for the highest quality of that.
So from drawing board to retail shelves what’s involved?
TF: We work with athletes in the top of their fields who have the context of what Arc’Teryx is trying to achieve. We test it for at least a year before it hits the shelves. We also work off of what the market is saying, but a lot of that is reactionary.
GL: Aside from testing my own products as much as possible, Patagonia has product testing field trips where staff travel to test products in different conditions. I’ve been to Argentina to ski and snow test. Patagonia also works with ambassadors who represent the sport and are in-line with Patagonia’s core values.
Where does the inspiration come from?
TF: Doing what I do. Climbing. I think the best designs are the ones that have given the most ingenuity, insight and development vs. something that is a sketch driven design.
GL: We look for seasonal inspiration. Often the design team collects individual ideas then we collaborate as a whole.
