If you’re going to Alaska in the start of May, what’s a typical packing list?
A girl that’s a junior in high school in a book I am writing is taking a trip to Anchorage, Alaska, on the first of May. I’ve never been to Alaska before, so I don’t know what this girl needs to pack that qualifies with the weather and temperature. Can somebody give me a list of clothes/shoes/toiletries/items needed to pack for a week-long trip in Anchorage?
The weather is really nice in May. Often a T-shirt and shorts is fine, however most people from warmer climates stick to the long sleeves and jeans. Temperatures are often in the 60s and 70s. A wind-breaker or light jacket is necessary; it can get pretty windy sometimes. Light rain gear is also useful. Good shoes are a must; Anchorage is very spread out and public transportation is deplorable, so people do a lot of walking here.
aside from the usual travel toiletries (toothbrush etc…) I would add some strong insect repellent, mosquitoes are vicious here.
If she is going to be outside of the city, I would take some very basic survival tools such as iodine tablets for water, a good knife, a compass, and something to start a fire. A camera is absolutely necessary, and batteries seem to go dead in Alaska quicker than anywhere else, so some extras are always useful.
