Have you ever considered what can happen if a disaster ever hits? “Disaster,” however, varies in scope for many. Most, myself included, associate the term with natural disasters: epic storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes. Such events obliterate even the smallest conveniences; no power, no running water, and no food are available for miles around the disaster site, and the primary goal is evacuating the area. Nevertheless, even small personal instances can turn into a natural disaster in which the same “basics” are gone.
Looking at all of these instances, I am reminded by the essential nature of emergency preparedness. Ask anyone about preparing for a natural disaster, and you’ll most likely receive an “I’m not ready”- type of reply. Others, being somewhat more conscious, may say, “I’ll think about it when the time comes.” But, as those in communities affected by hurricanes and power outages often experience, when “the time comes” is usually too late; everyone in the community rushes out to stores to buy water, food, tarps, flashlights, and other survival supplies, and not enough is available to go around.
I experience this once when I was visiting an island town from a ferry, and we were stranded for three days without power. We had to ration water and food. The stores were cleaned out and our only heat was a fireplace in the lobby of our inn – and this was February. That island had a major wake-up call and made changes for the future. I hope more people do this as well.
Emergency preparedness, particularly Food Storage, should be a regular practice – a lifestyle even, described by some. A stash of food and emergency supplies should be modified and added to regularly and should be in use on occasion. Those who specialize in food preservation and preparing for an emergency suggest to start with the basics: build up a storage of grains, beans, dehydrated milk, sugar, salt, oil, and seeds that will last a year.
These standard items, however, aren’t enough, particularly if a large-scale disaster occurs and you’re left for weeks without help and anyway to cook food. Variety, like with your everyday diet in the present, is key. When this is translated into emergency food storage, it often means having a supply of freeze dried food storage on hand. Mountain House Foods, for example, offers food storage packages of pouches and #10 cans that can last an individual up to two years and more. Meals through these emergency kits are planned out and prepackaged (no cooking needed), with a day’s calories coming out to 1100 to 1800. The shelf life of basics and supply food units, like Mountain House foods, is a concern many have. In general, the freeze dried & dehydrated food is stored in airtight cans and should not be exposed to oxygen, moisture, heat, or light if possible. Food kept in storage for several years, however, will still be intact and will have a shelf life of 15-30 years, but the nutritional content could diminish in the final years. The environment for these cans or pouches needs to be as dark as possible and a moderate temperature – 50F to 65F is ideal. An area close to the ground – also keeps heat out, and a dry basement, closet, or crawlspace is recommended.
At some point, the wheat, honey, freeze-dried or dehydrated canned items will need to be consumed. Although Mountain House foods can last more than 25 to 30 years if untouched, the lifespan of freeze-dried foods is shortened once the container is opened. For long-term storage in your emergency preparedness plan, the food should be kept in an airtight or preserving environment: place all remaining contents in a bag in a #10 can, have a commercial sealer to re-seal any #10 cans if possible, or freeze the food. In many cases, the food preserved in such a manner can last for a year or more after the cans are opened. Take advantage and start stocking up now while you are in calm waters, you will be glad you did.
